Why use an asphalt tonnage calculator

Whether you're a homeowner planning a new driveway in Brisbane, a builder quoting a car park in Melbourne, or a contractor estimating a road resurfacing job anywhere in Australia, getting the asphalt quantity right saves time and prevents costly over-ordering or shortfalls on-site. This asphalt volume calculator uses the same engineering formulas contractors rely on, so you can check quantities before you order hot mix or request a quote.

How the calculator works

The calculator converts your site measurements into area and volume, then applies asphalt density to estimate total weight.

Calculate area

Area is length multiplied by width.

Area (m²) = Length (m) × Width (m)

Calculate volume

Volume is area multiplied by thickness, with thickness converted from millimetres to metres.

Volume (m³) = Area (m²) × Thickness (mm ÷ 1000)

Calculate weight

Volume is multiplied by asphalt density to get total tonnage.

Weight (tonnes) = Volume (m³) × Density (kg/m³) ÷ 1000

Estimate cost (optional)

If you enter a price per tonne, the calculator multiplies it against total weight.

Estimated cost = Weight (tonnes) × Price per tonne

How much area does one tonne of asphalt cover?

Based on standard hot mix density (2,400 kg/m³):

Compacted thicknessCoverage per tonne
25mm≈ 17 m²
50mm≈ 8.5 m²
75mm≈ 5.7 m²
100mm≈ 4.3 m²

Thickness requirements differ by application, see our guides to asphalt driveways and car park construction for recommended depths.

Frequently Asked Questions

2,400 kg/m³ is a standard default for compacted hot mix asphalt and works for most residential and light commercial estimates.

Most residential driveways use 50–75mm. For commercial areas and car parks, see our car park construction guide for load-specific depths.

No, it estimates material weight only. For a full cost breakdown, see our asphalt driveway cost guide.

No — use our separate bitumen calculator, which is built for spray seal application rates rather than full-depth asphalt mix.

Yes, for estimating material on a defined area. For patch repairs or existing surface work, see our driveway repair and resurfacing pages.
